NCAA FOOTBALL SAMPLE

Here's a bit of my NCAA Football play-by-play. By popular demand, it's a single continuous segment (indeed, with no spot breaks to be telescoped out), at least 8 minutes long (12:55), and without late-game dramatics (taken from the 1st quarter). Let's break the huddle....

 NCAA Fb:  CONCORD AT LIBERTY:  pre-game       
CONCORD FACEd LONG ODDS IN ITS VISIT TO LYNCHBURG, FOR THREE MAIN REASONS. 1. THE DIVISION II MOUNTAIN LIONS were FACING A FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SUBDIVISION OPPONENT ON ITS HOME FIELD; 2. Concord's quarterback was MAKING HIS FIRST CAREER START; 3. The FLAMES saw the game as an important TUNEUP for WHAT THEY HOPeD WOULD BE A RUN TO AN fcs PLAYOFF BID. SETTING THE STAGE IS "THE MOUNTAIN lIONS PREVIEW SHOW," INCLUDING INTERVIEWS HEAD COACHES garin justice of concord and liberty's turner gill.

TO QUOTE MONTY PYTHON, "THERE'S NO SCORING, BUT CERTAINLY NO LACK OF EXCITEMENT!" THE UNDERDOGS SET THE TONE.

NCAA FB:  CONCORD AT LIBERTY:  2nd quarter/halftime         
CONCORD STOKEd ITS UPSET HOPES -- AND STUNned THE LIBERTY FAITHFUL -- WITH BIG PLAYS ON SPECIAL TEAMS AND DEFENSE.

NCAA FB:  CONCORD AT LIBERTY:  3rd quarter                  
THE MOUNTAIN LIONS KEPT IT CLOSE, but couldn't match the flames' size and depth. liberty possessed the football for 9:21 and extended its lead.

ncaa fb:  concord at liberty:  4th quarter/post-game   
cu's defense kept it in the game. but liberty's defense kept concord off the scoreboard. the mountain lions' best drive reached the flames' 21-yard line, but no further. the OUTCOME wasn't what concord SOUGHT, but the visit to liberty propelled the mountain lions to a strong finish to the season.  concord would win its last three games by a combined score of 85-29, finish runner-up in the wviac and claim its second straight seven-win campaign. not bad at all for "li'l ol' concord."

NCAA FB: 'WVIAC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME'    
CONCORD VS WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN          1st quarter                    
the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (now the Mountain East Conference) didn't have an official football championship game. But the final week of the regular season would serve the same purpose. West Virginia Wesleyan visited Concord in THE MOST EAGERLY-ANTICIPATED GAME IN CALLAGHAN STADIUM HISTORY. the WINNER WOULD win THE Wviac and stake its claim to an appearance in the ncaa Division II playoffs.
CONCORD, UNDER FIRST-YEAR HEAD COACH GARIN JUSTICE, WAS seeking ITS FIRST title IN TWO DECADES. WESLEYAN FEATURED all-american QB Adam Neugebauer at the helm of a high-flying offense. THE opening QUARTER lived up to the hype. THE TWO TEAMS COMBINED FOR 427 YARDS OF OFFENSE, FOUR TOUCHDOWNS AND 27 POINTS....

NCAA Fb:  'WVIAC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME'   
CONCORD VS WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN           2nd quarter
AFTER THE FRANTIC 1st QUARTER, the tempo slowed, IF ONLY BY COMPARISON. The Mountain Lions and Bobcats produced A COMPARATIVELY paltry 276 YARDS.  NEUGEBAUER'S TWO TD PASSES trumped a QB SNEAK FROM ZACH GROSSI, AND VISITING Wesleyan TOOK THE LEAD INTO HALFTIME....

CONCORD VS WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN             3rd quarter
CALLAGHAN STADIUM fell quiet WHEN WESLEYAN PUSHED ITS LEAD TO 13 POINTS LESS THAN TWO MINUTES AFTER HALFTIME. BUT THE MOUNTAIN LIONS "RESTORED THE ROAR" with 21 UNANSWERED POINTS; zach GROSSI threw three TOUCHDOWN PASSES -- TWO TO RYAN STEWART -- and concord held A 42-34 LEAD HEADING INTO THE FINAL 15 MINUTES....

CONCORD VS WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN             4th quarter
the noise level at Callaghan Stadium rose after BRIAN KENNEDY'S TD PLUNGE PUT CU AHEAD 48-34 WITH LESS THAN 5:00 REMAINING.
BUT WESLEYAN COUNTERED WITH A quick 89-YARD TOUCHDOWN DRIVE to pull within 48-40 and WITHIN one POSSESSION OF SENDING THE GAME TO OVERTIME. THE BOBCATS MISFIRED ON AN ONSIDE KICK, BUT THEIR DEFENSE STOPPED CONCORD ON DOWNS, giving NEUGEBAUER AND COMPANY ONE MORE CHANCE. 
A GAME THIS GOOD COULDN'T POSSIBLY COME DOWN TO THE FINAL PLAY, COULD IT?
